Navigation pane items displayed per level: databases per server and tables per database.PowerQuery is a great instrument that can do much more than just take data from source and pull it in a table or Power Pivot.
We can clear and transform data in multiple ways, but there are some transformations, usual in Excel, which are not so convenient to make in Power Query. Or reference to a value that is in specified column and 4 rows above from referencing row?
The easiest way to understand item addressing in Power Query, in my mind, is analyzing of steps code. It has 5 rows, and in the first column it filled with, suddenly, dates, in second — some values:.
We would like to get a value from cell B4, exactly Okay, we got In third row of code we see desired reference. Important : rows and lists in Power Query have so called zero-based index: first position in list always has index of 0, same for the row numbers in a table. So when we ask Power Query for value from third row, we have to use 2 as row position. This formula could be decrypted as follows: give me a value from [ Amount ] field in 2nd record from Source table.
Last option listed above adds a lot to imagination of what we can do with it, but now we looking straight to our question: absolute and relative references to a single value. A Record[Field] expression has relatively same syntax: it looks up a field in a record by field name.
If the specified field does not exist in the record, an error is raised. Then we get a field [Amount] from this record row of table is a record with column names as field names :. It looks so similar and can give us confidence that there is no difference between column name and position order.
Actually those are different approaches, and we need to remember it for future purposes. But anyway, both this approaches are giving us a key to any type of row references in Power Query tables. In sample table we have data that looks like account remnants. Suppose we need to get a calculated column which will show us a dynamic change of account values. For this purpose, we have to get a value from row above, and compare it with the value in current row.
But in previous examples we can see that position reference and column reference is hard-coded into formula. So we have to find a way to transform row numbers to relative-style reference. You can edit the table by "Edit Query" Option. You can see now the new column is added at the last.

That is for power bi modeling, not for live query. I am using live query and using database for tabular model. I came across this post and it is what i need. However when I create the index column.
I have seen several places where they show you how to create the index column, but How do i use it in my BI Table???? Turn on suggestions. Auto-suggest helps you quickly narrow down your search results by suggesting possible matches as you type.

You can first add an index column and then create a measure with following formula to get the dynamic row numbers.
View solution in original post. I want Index to be start from 1 in Every table for index column which in the sence must be a dynamic calculation which gives valuse from 1 to n every time we use it like row number in Cognos and SSRS. I have created Index column and then applied mentioned formula, but isn't work. This doesn't work when sorting by a numeric measure revenue, in your example.
The formula does limit the numbers from 1 to number of displayed rows, but the Row numbers are not dynamic Any ideas on how to fix? When i use this DAX to generate Current row number getting the error below when i added the measure to the table. Thanks in advance. I tried to use your formula, but unfortunately it doesn't work See attached image. Turn on suggestions. There are a few options when you add the index column. If you are just after a simple row number, then the above gives you what you want. If you want your index to restart at the beginning of every quarter, then you are after something like below:. As you can see the index is restarting at the beginning of every group. Before I explain the method to you: there are multiple ways of getting the row number based on a group. Some of them require writing Power Query scripts, and to be fair some of them are faster than the method I would explain here.
But if you do not have so many data rows, and you want an easy solution, I do recommend the below approach. I might write about other methods later in other blog posts. The first step is to Group the data, right-click on the field that you want to be your grouping field, and select Group By.
Then you will see the Group By the window, you can even group by multiple fields if you want with holding the Ctrl and selecting multiple fields, or using the Advanced tab here. Selecting All Rows means no aggregation from the group by, instead, it will populate a sub table from the original table for each group.
If you click on a blank area of a cell that contains Table in it, you can see the sub-table in the preview pane underneath.
Now that you have the sub-table of each group, you can add the index column to the sub-table. However, there is no graphical user interface for that at the moment.
You can do it this way: Add a Custom Column:. Then using the Table. AddIndexColumn function in Power Query, you can add the index to the sub-table. The [Count] in the expression above is the name of the column in my table that has sub-tables in it, if your column name is different, you should be selecting that from the list. It would ask what you wanted to:. Hi Steven Not sure If I understand what do you mean, but I guess, you are talking about; it would be good to have the functionality of group by and partition by etc similar to the row-number function in t-SQL.
